Durango, Colorado was buried under 36 inches of snow following several storms that had passed through the San Juan Mountains, the week of January 17, 2010. The railroad was snowed in. Cuts north of Rockwood were filled with snow, and a number of snow slides had run between Rockwood and Cascade Canyon. Machines of Iron was there to show you how the flanger train and the maintenance of way crews ...

The Uintah Railway was a 75 mile railroad that operated from 1904 to 1939. It ran in northwestern Colorado from Mack, Colorado to Watson, Utah. Featuring the original film footage of the new 3 foot narrow gauge articulated locomotives in 1926 on the 7.5% grades of Baxter Pass. Our video combines the historic motion picture film from the Lucian Sprague family and the Colorado Railroad Museum arc...

Around the Narrow Gauge Circle
Переглядів 30 тис.15 років тому
Several names are widely recognized as belonging to great railroad photographers. One of those names belongs to Otto Perry, a man who traveled the country, recording both still and moving pictures of our nation's railroad history. One of his favorites was surely the Denver and Rio Grande Western, and over the years, he filmed trains around this entire route. Machines of Iron, in cooperation wit...

South African Garratts
Переглядів 75 тис.15 років тому
The cloud of steam on the South African horizon belonged to the narrow gauge Garratt locomotives. Serving the industrial railways of South Africa in the 1990s, these articulated locomotives were hard workers. This 1995 trip on a special steam excursion records the Garratts on several railways, including a two and one-half foot gauge line. Not long after our trip, the Garratts were replaced by d...
Russian Steam in Ukraine
Переглядів 87 тис.15 років тому
Machines of Iron revisits Ukraine in the fall of 1996 when the countryside is resplendent in autumn colors and the air is filled with locomotive steam and smoke. A special steam excursion is the reason for our visit, and we travel aboard a comfortable passenger train behind several different Russian locomotives including a 0-10-0, doubleheaded 4-6-4s, and the most modern Russian steam locomotiv...

Machines of Iron traveled to Australia in April 2000 to ride the rails behind vintage steam and diesel locomotives, NSWGR 38 Class 4-6-2 Pacifics, Victoria Railways R Class 4-6-4 Hudsons, NSWGR 42 Class Co-Co GM Diesel, and NSWGR 442 Class Co-Co Alco Diesel. On Easter Sunday our crews visited the Ballarine Peninsula Railway and were there as the crew fired up the railroad's 2-8-2 and 4-6-0. It'...
New Zealand Steam

In 1998, Machines of Iron photographers traveled to New Zealand to follow Mainline Steam's four steam locomotives on an excursion across New Zealand. The tour travels to both islands and stops at Aukland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Greymouth. Breathtaking is an understatement when we talk about New Zealand's scenery. Mountains, rivers, gorges, and steam locomotives are a railfan's delight. J...
The Great South African Steam Festival 1991
Переглядів 87 тис.15 років тому
For five days in 1991, the South African railways featured their steam locomotives on their mainline from Kimberly to De Aar in a celebration called the Great 1991 Steam Festival. This would be the last display of these magnificent locomotives before steam would be replaced by diesel power. Join us as we visit Beaconsfield, the last operational steam shed in South Africa. Watch high-stepping st...

Wish the UP had the balls to let other companies run steam on their trackage for another event. Shame
Northwestern Pacific made 2 comebacks in fact. However the 2nd one is just more of a small budget shortline today. YES, they used to roster some cool locomotives like the Ex-ATSF GP7u or NWP GP9, but both of these are no longer used. They now operate the Gensets and a SW1500. (Bloody nose paint scheme). In my opinion the 1990s NWP comeback was better, especially with the fact they were able to organize a public train ride, and all locomotives having a same "black widow" paint scheme that had slight changes.
I bet those things are a pain in the butt to operate and maintain.
You've gotta love em

At 0:05, I see the Mediterranean Revival architecture of the train station, similar to what the South Shore Line uses, even today (the station at Beverly Shores, Indiana is the last remaining station using that architecture).
Classy rools on u 💛💚♥️ 2 gpood luk on u
I wonder what year were any of them filmed?
When were each of them filmed, like what year?
Magnificent!
I know that route! I got that as an add-on to my Train Simulator Classic game!
I used to ride my dirt bike up and down from Northbrook all the way to Harms on the abandon line. 1972-1976. It's all still there too.
I watch this back in 2005 on RFD-TV

When I was recording this railroad it was during the end of The McCloud River Railroad and the beginning of the McCloud Railway. The last tape I made was when the 25 was in the shop in mid rebuild. SO this is SOOOOooooo good to see. I love this footage. Great STUFF !!!! The railroad is in limbo for the 18 miles between Mt. Shasta and McCloud. Everything else is pulled up. Not much of a future but good to see the line when it ran !!! THANKS FOR POSTING. October 2023.
Great stuff!
Let me tell you folks, 1993 was probably the best time to visit this line. Between early March into early May, three maintenance-of-way projects took place on the Southern freight route through Texas & eastern New Mexico resulting in work windows disrupting the normal flow for hours at a time. As a result, CHICO decided to send their fleet of UPS SHOOTERS over the Northern Route via Raton & Glorietta Passes. The end result was that railfans had the RARE opportunity to witness SF'S fleet of FOUR-AXLE SUPERFLEETS sprinting across the flat Colorado & New Mexico deserts at 70MPH splitting the fabled semaphores & battling the steep grades of Raton & Glorietta in both directions.

Thank goodness we still have the SouthShore line. It's been alter the last 2 years, but this last interurban as of 2023 has a great future. The Hammond to Dyer Indiana line will be the first interurban rail branch built since the NorthShore Skokie valley route in 1926.The SouthShore branch to Dyer will open in 2025
Everyone is talking about 0:17 but nobody is talking about how one of the trains casually didn’t do the sequence while the other one did

To kill those painting schemes was a crime of anti-culture.
My son would really like the Tennessee Pass line from Dotsero to Parkdale to be restored and used again for both freight and/or passenger trains. But does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!
The only obstacle to reopening Tennessee pass is UP because they're really playing hardball over a piece of infrastructure they have no intention of using again!
Would like to see the whole Alameda corridor from Dolores thru to West Redondo jct.
SP 4449 has had a nice variety of paint schemes that have been applied over the years, the BNSF black/ silver paint scheme is a reflection back to the paint scheme that was worn by Southern Pacific steam engines during their final years of service during the 1950s. SP 4449 looked unique and attractive with this black and silver paint scheme from 2000-2001, the 4449 is a true supreme quality steam excursion star representative locomotive.
That's Smart.
I remember seen this and other train videos like this on the RFD TV channel. I really miss that videos: the BNSF Stocktown Tower, the Rio Grande route, the Southern Pacific Tennesse Pass, the Union Pacific in Modesto CA... a lot of them. Greetings from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico✌
You still buy our DVDs of all these shows at www.machinesofiron.net
The Santa Fe rr definitely had some incredible steam power for their steam era engine roster, I like the Hudson 4-6-4, Northern 4-8-4, and the Texas 2-10-4 type locomotives as my 3 favorite classes of steam power.
Sp 4449's journey

Yep. Air horn.
GREAT vid, glad I shot this line before UP mothballed it . NOTHING like EMD's in run 8 up the Tennessee Pass ! Thinks it will EVER reopen ? Lets run the F Units to Minturn yard !!
0:43 Is that 2467 or 2472?
That was 2467. The whistle it has (apparently it’s a custom long bell 5 chime made to sound like a 6 chime) sounds completely different compared to sister engine 2472’s whistle, which is the genuine SP 6 chime.
Sad we don’t get to see Uintah 50 or 51 today.
Very good color footage, but where was this exactly, in or near what town, in which state?
This stupid country gave up all the mass transit for air pollution and crammed highways.

Holly cow, that cabover Peterbilt just cut the car off ....that truck musta been very new here.
All that GREAT RAILROAD, torn up...and I know to this day, it could have really made a difference! :)
